FROM TEACHER TO PUPIL:
The Golden Age of the Viola da Gamba
Music by Sainte-Colombe, Marin & Roland Marais
Sarah Cunningham & Arnie Tanimoto, viola da gamba Charles Weaver, theorbo
The concert explores the viola da gamba during its golden age in 17th- and 18th-century France. Music of three generations of composers from the reclusive genius Le Sieur de Sainte Colombe to his most famous pupil, the renowned Marin Marais, and then to Marais’s son Roland, a fine musician in his own right. The concert also celebrates the student-teacher relationship as it continues into the 21st century.
The program includes Marais’s beautiful “Tombeau” for his teacher.
